How to get rid of gophers - Gopher Mounds

Identification and biology

Mature Pocket Gophers can reach sizes between 6 and 10 inches. The “pocket” in their name comes from small pockets in their mouths used to store food and nesting material.

Gophers have short, fine fur that can range from dark black to pale brown. They are a burrowing rodent, meaning, you will rarely see gopher activity above ground. Though if you do, it will be when they are feeding at the edge of an opening, creating a new burrow entrance, or leaving one burrow area to create another burrow elsewhere.

What do gopher mounds look like?

Gopher mounds are distinct. Often you will see gopher mounds in a crescent moon or horseshoe shape with a plugged burrow hole off to one side of the mound. These mounds are neither entrances nor exits, as a Gopher would be happy to stay underground for the majority of its lifetime.

Instead, these mounds are feeding holes. When observing these feeding holes, it is often the case that you will see a 4 to 8 inch ring of dead grass or vegetation as gophers will rarely venture more than a bodies length from the burrow opening in order to avoid predators.

Are these types of mounds popping up on your lawn or in your garden?

Damage caused by gophers

Gophers find yards, farmland, and gardens so appealing because these are usually well irrigated areas. Well irrigated soil is much softer and easier to burrow than hard dry patches of dirt. Where there is water there is always vegetation and foliage for gophers to feed on. These burrows and mounds can damage equipment, become a tripping threat in fields used for recreation, and have even been known to trip and break the legs of younger horses and cattle.

Gophers are voracious herbivores who feed on most garden crops, ornamental plants, shrubs, trees, and even vines. There are few plant species that gophers will not consume given the chance. A single gopher can tunnel beneath a row of plants or vegetables and pull them down into its burrow causing a considerable amount of damage in a short amount of time. These tunnels can also divert the irrigation path of water, creating patches of soil erosion and killing plants even if the gophers don’t actually eat them.

Gophers are also rodents. Being rodents they constantly need to gnaw in order to check the growth of the two large incisors they used to dig and forage. This necessity to gnaw often leads to damaged underground piping and wiring that can be expensive and time consuming to repair.

Trapping has the highest rate of success when removing a gopher infestation from your home or commercial property. Not only does it permanently remove the pest, but it is also environmentally friendly since it does not inundate the ground with poison or noxious fumes and chemicals.

In irrigated areas like lawns, farmland, gardens, etc. the infestation rate is rapid. It is much easier to deal with one or two gophers than a colony. If you see a few mounds act fast and contact a professional.
